• Academy Emerging Investigator Mentoring Program

    The American Academy of Neurological Surgeons, the premier neurosurgical organization responsible for fostering and directing the future of neurosurgical research, has established the Academy Emerging Investigator Program in close association with the NRCDP and the NIH/NINDS.

     

    The Academy Emerging Investigator Mentoring Program is a two-year national neurosurgeon-investigator mentoring program for junior faculty. It builds upon the efforts of the NRCDP to support junior neurosurgery faculty as they pursue careers as independent investigators. Accepted applicants will receive individualized mentoring from senior neurosurgeon-investigators and NIH personnel while attending special, small-group Emerging Investigator Seminars at the American Academy of Neurological Surgery Annual Meeting, the American Association of Neurological Surgeons Annual Meeting, and the NRCDP Retreat. There is no financial support associated with this program.

     

    Candidates for the Academy Emerging Investigator Mentoring Program must be within the first three years of their faculty position, must have a commitment from their Department Chair to provide five years of 50% protected time for research, be in the process of preparing a K08 or K23 career development grant, and demonstrate willingness and ability to attend the career development seminars at the American Academy of Neurological Surgery Annual Meeting, the American Association of Neurological Surgeons Annual Meeting, and NRCDP Retreat.

     

    Timeline of Academy Emerging Investigator Program:

    There are two application pathways into the Academy Emerging Investigator Mentoring Program:

    1. Applicants who apply for the NRCDP grant but do not receive a K- or R-level award will be considered by the NRCDP review committee in the same year's application pool. No separate application is needed for this pathway.

    2. Applicants in the first three years of their faculty position may be nominated by their department chairs.  An application is needed for this pathway and is due each year on September 1. The application should be submitted below and must include the following components:

    Required Elements

    • Nomination letter from chair
      • Includes discussion of department support for the applicant’s research program, department commitment to the applicant for 50% protected time for research, and department commitment to send investigator to all four Emerging Investigator Mentoring Programs over the course of the two-year period of mentoring
    • Applicant and mentor NIH biosketches
    • 1-page introduction to the applicant and their research program (to be prepared by the applicant)
      • Includes discussion of education history, description of department and institutional support, research area of interest, mentor and mentor commitment to the applicant’s development as an investigator, and long-term career plans (research and clinical)
    • Specific Aims for K08/K23 grant
